Mele Kalikimaka!

December 25, 2017

What a wonderful time of year to celebrate! I love that this season everyone is focused a little more on the Savior. He really is the reason for the season. Because of Him we can have peace and hope in our life! What a great time to remember his humble birth and upbringing to become the King of Kings. As we follow his example we can find true happiness. I love this time of year where we can give as He did. As we do this we can learn the joy that service brings.
Last week after running around trying to get gifts ready to send we ran out of time to do something fun. Sister Sicotte wanted to go to a museum. So we stopped by to check the hours for another week and took a picture in front of it!

We were able to meet this wonderful couple this week. They were referral from the Marshallese Elders who always go to this huge public housing. For short they call it KPT. There is building A and building B. There are 17 floors. On each floor there are 3 wings....there are a lot of Chuukese people here. There are only 2 huge elevators. So anyway there are always people to talk to. We went to visit this referral. His name is Ranicio. When they opened the door I was like no way, we just saw these people in the elevator...so funny. Anyway they were super nice and let us in. We got to know them and shared the first lesson, the Restoration. By the end we realized the other lady was listening too who we later found out is his wife! We invited them to read the introduction of the Book of Mormon and Ranicio's wife read the whole thing right there! It was great. They seem really sincere. We are excited to start teaching them.

We were able to stop by the Answer family's house. They are related to the Kisin family that just got baptized. The mom is a member but some of the kids aren't baptized. They are super nice. We were able to share the Restoration with the daughter Jay Ann. She is about 11. She speaks english really well and is able to translate for her mom who doesn't speak as well. She understood well which was great! We were able to set Jay Ann with a date to be baptized in February!

On Wednesday we went on exchanges. My companion was Sister Wilson. She is super awesome! She is from Arizona and goes home in April. She has been through a lot of medical problems other mission but you would never know. She was even still getting over pneumonia when we were on exchanges but I couldn't even tell. She was super energetic and willing to work! We had a great day talking to people! We found some new investigators and set another person with a baptism date. His name is Jeff. He just got out of jail and is ready to turn his life around. We taught him about the Plan of Salvation because he wanted to know where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going.

Friday night we had fun and went Caroling to a few people with the Elders. It was pretty fun because we had a keyboard and Elder Chiang played for the hymns sang. We practiced earlier on the day and I felt like I had to teach the Elders Jingle Bells. I also taught them Mele Kalikimaka. We had a great time Caroling and we were able to visit 2 of our investigators and they seemed to enjoy it!

We taught an interesting lesson on Saturday. We met the husband someone who used to be taught. He isn't sure if he believes in God. So we decided to teach Him about the Plan of Salvation. We were going to go into his house but he was the only one home so we stood at the door. And man it was not a wintery day. The sun was shining down on us. It was super hot. But it was a good lesson and he seemed to understand well.

We contacted another referral from a different group of Elders and it was pretty funny because he had no recollection of meeting them! haha But he let us in and we got to know him and shared the Light the World video. It was kind of funny because he said he already saw it...so we were like alright! We gave him Book of Mormon and set a time to come back in a few weeks when he and his wife can be there. Hopefully he doesn't forget about meeting us! Haha

On Sunday we were walking to meet March (one of our investigators) to walk her to church. As we were walking up the overpass we saw her and her boyfriend with the girls in the stroller already coming! It was great because her boyfriend said he wasn't going make it but he came!
We were happy to see the Kisin family make is to church and they were all so cute and dressed up. It's so precious to see because these families don't have much.

Sacrament meeting was cute hearing the Primary sing but also a little stressful because we were asked to perform a musical number. I accepted because I'm like it's just the loving, non-judgemental Micronesian people. But regardless I was still super nervous. Sister Sicotte played the piano minnyou that Away in the Manager is one of the few songs she can play and I sang a solo. So out mediocre talents came together. It wasn't too bad but my heart was pounding out of my chest for no reason so my voice was a little shaky at times but we survived without any disasters!

We were privileged to hear the Elders and two members sing Silent Night acapella and man are they a group to listen to! They are wonderful at harmonizing! I could listen to them all day and one of the Elders sounds like he could be a singer!

We had a fun linger longer after church to eat and talk. We had a good time and I was able to hand out a few gifts I wrapped. Just simple things because I know some families don't have much.

Afterwards we visited a few people and had a great time. We would sing Silent Night as I played on the Ukulele and then share the video A Savior is Born. It was great!

We were able to go over to a member's house for dinner. She gave us food to take home because she wasn't feeling well. But we prepared a fun Christmas message so we shared it with them. My parents did the 12 days of Christ for me. Each day talks about a different name of Christ and what he is. And there was a fun gift for each day. For example, Christ is the King of Kings and there would be a scripture reference and then the gift was a Crown from Burger King. We had fun with it!

It was great to feel the joy of giving this Christmas!

Love,

Sister Heath

It's almost Christmas! Woohoo!

December 18, 2017

So my wonderful companion was gracious enough to run around with me last p-day as well as this p-day so I could get my Christmas shopping done. I wasn't planning on doing any but when I got the package from home I felt like I needed to.
We had a full week of talking to everyone, handing out as many Light the World cards as we could (they are a great lead-in to talk to everyone), and doing our best to spread the wonderful news of this gospel.
At the end of our p-day we saw this car wash place and decided to check it out and believe it or not it was their open house! We got a $27ish wash for free! It was fun and colorful, we turned up our music and were loving it! Oh, the life and joys of a missionary!
We definitely saw miracles this week...they never cease. We go to visit someone and find someone else that we were meant to talk to. We were able to visit one of our investigators who is preparing to be baptized January 13th. Her name is Gricia. She is the cutest and so is her 1 year old daughter! She doesn't speak very much English so we are grateful when we can get a translator. When we can't we are grateful for the Chuukese materials we have to help explain. She is really progressing, we are excited for her! We also were able to set 2 others with dates this week which was exciting because they seem really solid. Most Chuukese people will say yes to a date but it's not very solid. So  we were excited when we asked one of our new investigators to be baptized in the first lesson and she was like I need to repent first. We were like yes! She understands!
We had a fun dinner social at our apartment complex. They provided Panda Express and there was some great calming live Hawaiian music. We weren't able to stay too long but it was a great opportunity to talk to some people. The Senior Missionaries that work in the office also live there so they were able to talk to some people and actually talked to our new neighbor who is really nice!
Saturday was Sister Sicotte's birthday so I sneakily set up some decorations while she was getting ready. We also went to lunch at the Hawaiian Sweet Potato Factory which was delicious. I tried to make her feel special. We were able to go to China town and we handed out several copies of the Book of Mormon and flyers for the Christmas Concert.
We had dinner at this cute Sushi place and it was really good. I had a really good Chicken Katsu Bento. Then we headed to the Christmas Concert to greet people. It was fun handing out the programs and seeing many people from Kahala Ward and other places. One of ou investigators came but we didn't save seats and all the reserved seats for investigators were taken (which is actually really great that they came) So we ended up sitting to the side of the stage where you can't really see. But we were still able to enjoy the show. They had a few different choirs: youth, children's, and adult. They also had a wonderful Orchestra. They had a full program of a variety of songs. They even did songs from The Polar Express along with dancers and a little boy singing. So cute! We saw another investigator and her family come which was great. What a special treat to be able to experience that!
I am excited for Christmas and love this time of year to think of Christ and be more like Him. I am grateful for His sacrifice that we can receive strength from. I know that when we try to be like Christ by loving and serving others as he would we can be happiest.

Love,

Sister Heath

#Blessed

December 11, 2017

Last week on P-day we were able to be treated to lunch with the Ahuna's at Red Lobster. Sister Ahuna is my grandma's cousin. They are a super awesome family. President Ahuna is over the singles branch. He is super outgoing and fun. Sister Ogawa served with them so it was a great opportunity for both of us to see them!

Tuesday was a busy day of driving a Sister to the airport and picking one up. So I said bye to Sister Ogawa. My new companion is Sister Sicotte from the Visitor's Center. She has been out for 16 months. She is super awesome. She is very energetic and excited for new challenges. She also speaks Chinese so we actually had a lunch with the Elders serving in Makiki because they have a few Chinese. It was a fun experience!

Although I'm new at being in charge of the area we were stilled blessed with being able to see the people we planned to see maybe not at the time we planned but sometime throughout the week. We also were able to find some awesome new investigators.

On Sunday we walked one of our new investigators to church. It was really cute when we showed up to her house she was wearing her Chuukese dress as well as her 2 daughters who are 3 and 1. She was ready to go.
We had our family that was baptized last week confirmed which was great. I'm not sure how much they understood but I hope they felt the spirit.

Sister Sicotte and I were able to be responsible for teaching Sunday school and Relief Society. We ended up teaching about The Gospel of Jesus Christ for Gospel Principles. This talks about having faith, repenting, being baptized, receiving the holy ghost, and enduring to the end. It started off rough but went well and luckily we had a member who could translate. We were able to get more participation than usually happens in that class with the regular teachers.

Relief Society we taught about reaching out in love to recent converts and less active members. We had an activity for everyone to get to know someone they don't know and it went really great and we discussed the importance of supporting each other.

This week was good and I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve in this area.

Aloha,

Sister Heath

What a Week!

December 4, 2017

Aloha!

Last P-day we didn't do anything too exciting. We just tried to get things done. Sister Ogawa is getting ready to go home and we are getting smartphones so we have to do some training before that happens so that's exciting!
We also finally got our car washed and waxed and it was glorious :) haha
In the evening we picked some Sisters up from the airport that were flying in for a meeting from Big island. They bunked with us so we had a good time :)

We had the privilege of having Elder Stanfill from the Seventy come for a mission tour. So on Friday all the missionaries on the island gathered for the conference. It was fun to see everyone. It was also fun because our zone all made matching ties and they made extras for the Senior couples that work in the mission office, for President Bekker and Elder Stanfill. They all wore them. It was great! Since we are the only Sister's in the zone we decided to braid the fabric into our hair. So it was fun! Elder Stanfill and his wife were great and had really good advice for us.

We had a great lesson with our only investigator in Kahala. He said he will prepare himself to be baptized the date is yet to be decided but he already converted in many ways. He was struggling with the Book of Mormon. He read the assignment we gave him 3 times because he has a hard time. He also decided to put himself in the position of Nephi which is exactly what we are supposed to do!

That night we didn't have a dinner and decided to go to a restaurant at Zippy's in Kahala. We ended up seeing a bunch of people from the ward. Bishop and his wife paid for our meal. It was a fun time!

Saturday night we got transfer news. I knew that I would be staying but we are no longer over the Kahala Ward which I am super sad about. We are only covering the Micronesian branch. My companion is coming from the Visitor's Center. Her name is Sister Ciciotte. I've heard great things about her. She also was called to the Visitor's Center to speak Mandarin so we will be helping with those people in the Makiki Ward.

Yesterday we got everything ready and were able to have a baptism for a family we were teaching. It was really great! The spirit was so strong! I am so grateful for that opportunity and all the support we received throughout.

I know that the gospel can bless our lives and that this season is a special time to remember Christ. If you want to do more you can go to Mormon.org and follow Light The World. Each day they have a different service you can do from what Christ taught.

Much love and aloha,

Sister Heath

Calmness of the week all made up for on Sunday

November 28, 2017

Last week for p-day we went with the Elders to a part of town where they have some really cool graffiti and took pictures. It was actually really fun!

We also were able to visit the Mission President's wife from when Sister Ogawa's parent's served in Japan, Sister Shimabakuro. She was really sweet and very well put together and had a really good memory of Sister Ogawa's parents.

Later in the day we found a really cool place to eat. It's called the Hawaiian Sweet Potato Factory. We had sandwiches with bread made out of sweet potato and a spread made from sweet potato. It was our favorite thing!
The most memorable thing that happened this week was with a family we have planned to get baptized next week. We went to go teach them and have a lesson and found out they moved and they didn't know where. So as we were about to leave the dad came running down to the car out of nowhere and the rest of the family came later. Luckily there was a friend there that spoke good english that could translate and tells us kind of where they live but they didn't know the address. So we rescheduled. It was a miracle because they were coming to their family's house for Thanksgiving and must have seen us. Also they don't really answer their phone and they can't call us. So we left to try and find whereabouts they lived with their limited directions. We drove around for at least an hour trying to find it so we wouldn't have to worry about it the next day. But decided to stop looking. The next day we were trying to find a translator and the person we usually ask was not feeling very good but she came to help because she is awesome..her name is Geraldine ! We gave her the same directions that we got and we were able to find where they lived right away. And we were able to have a lesson at their new home! We had another lesson with them the next day put Geraldine couldn't come and we couldn't find anyone. So we stopped by a recent convert's house and she said she could come but had her 2 boys. So we were trying to get permission to drive them too but they are too little. Then her husband comes home and we were able to go! Her name is Linsel and she is actually cousins with the Mom, Lackrisia that we are teaching, they grew up together but haven't seen each other since. We taught about the Word of Wisdom to find out that they are drinking coffee which is so sad because the first time we met them we reviewed the Word of Wisdom and they said they didn't have any problems :(So we were like now they have to wait 3 weeks to get baptized because that is the mission rule. Well the next day at church President and Sister Bekker were there and we were telling them about what happened and how we were okay with it because we didn't want to rush the baptism because they still need to be taught a lot. Then President made the comment that an investigator has to wait 3 weeks unless the Mission President says otherwise...I was like are you implying something President? (But I was already okay with the fact that they weren't going to be baptized) So he ended up saying it is fine if they said they are willing to commit to give it up which they were.
We also had a hectic morning trying to get them rides to church but it worked out. Then we had a hectic rest of the day finding a translator to help us teach and do the baptism interview but it all worked out with the amazing hand of God! I know this is supposed to happen because although it wasn't easy trying to get everything figured out..everything worked out! So we are having a baptism of a family of 4 next Sunday!!!!

We also had a really cool experience when we had the Elders give Geraldine a blessing because she isn't feeling very well and is going through a lot of hard things. It was really special and powerful when the Elders walked in with their white shirts and ties. You could feel the spirit immediately. After they gave her a blessing we all knelt down for a blessing on the house and you could feel the spirit so strong! I definitely felt the power of the priesthood it was amazing to feel any bad spirit that was there leave. I was reminded of the power of the priesthood.
I am so grateful to be surround by worthy and righteous priesthood holders!

We had Thanksgiving with the Bishop and his wife cooked all the food. She literally made enough for an army and we had dinner at the church. She had her grandnephew from the BYU football team come with 15 other players. We also had good friends of hers there that 1 is a less active member and the rest aren't. It was a cool experience. It was definitely not your classic thanksgiving either but it was still enjoyable.
We were able to have a classic and may I say fancy Thanksgiving with a member from Kahala, Sister Powell and 2 of her friends on Saturday...it is a tradition for them. So that was wonderful!

I am so grateful to be here and for the wonderful people that surround me!

Much love and aloha,

Sister Heath

Not A Dull Moment part 2

Novewmber 20, 2017

Sorry I wasn't able to send out my email last week. We emailed for 30 minutes and had to leave to drop our car off for maintenance and planned on coming back and it didn't happen.
Last week was crazy to say the least.

We had the Book of Mormon experiment on Monday so our p-day was switched to Tuesday. It was such a great experience talking to people and sharing with them my knowledge when they wanted to know more.

We got a call Monday night saying that we needed to be packed up and ready to move the next day. So most of our p-day was spent packing up. And the man who was interested in buying the apartment wanted everything out. We didn't have the key for the new apartment so we just started moving everything while we were waiting to get the key. We luckily had a ton of help from the Bendixens. We had to wait a while for the key and then we were able to move everything up. Then we tried to get everything else done that we needed and ran out of time to come back and email because the library and mission office close at 5. We also kind of got stuck in traffic so we headed to dinner with a family from the Kahala Ward. The Burtins and they treated us to a nice Italian restaurant. I had ravioli and pumpkin cheescake for dessert. It was great. It all ended up being okay.
We were able to do the BOM experiment 1 last time before everyone went back to Utah and it was great. I really enjoyed sharing the BOM with others.

We also had quite a few lessons this week that were in Japanese because Sister Ogawa is Japanese. A family in the Kahala ward has two Japanese high school exchange students for 2 weeks and a young woman for 2 months studying Lomilomi massage. So we had a lesson with them. We also had two other lessons and it was pretty cool and Sister Ogawa loved it and seeing how prepared they are because most people she said at home are pretty closed off.

We also had a week full of miracles but one of them was in the Kahala Ward. We decided to visit someone that used to investigate and her husband. We met the Husand Raven and found out that he isn't a member but he went to church straight for 5 years after meeting the Elders. Then he stopped because his family was too supportive and he kind of lost his testimony. He hadn't been contacted for 5 years until we met him! And he said he was thinking about coming back to church! We had a great visit and he was able to make it to church on Sunday! We are excited to see what will happen in the near future! We have an appointment with him this Wednesday.

We were excited to have 9 investigators at church. Especially the family that we had a hassle with getting to church last week. We felt bad that we couldn't find them a ride. But we walked in to sacrament to find the whole family there! Such a miracle!

We are truly blessed in this area.

I love being with Sister Ogawa she has taught me alot especially about patience and forgiveness. She is the sweetest!

I know the Book of Mormon has power and when we strive to read it everyday it can help out lives improve. I also know that everything happens in the Lord's timing but if we are faithful everything will work out. This week was a true testament of that!

Love you all!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm thankful for all of your love and support!

Not A Dull Moment (The letter from last week that I didn't get to finish)

Started November 14, 2017
Sent November 20, 2017

This week was busy as normal but it was really great because we were able to find a lot of new investigators! 16 to be exact and they seem pretty solid...most Chuukese aren't super solid... We also set 13 people with baptism dates which was super exciting. We even had 7 people at Stake Conference that we know of which is great because it's usualy hard to get people to come to Stake Conference. We are truly blessed with the work!

We had exchanges this week which was fun. I went to the Honolulu west area with Sister Topp to Aiea. They have a nice sofa that I enjoyed at night and in the morning when we were getting ready :) haha It was pretty hot when we were walking around but it was fun. We were able to find 1 new investigator which was great. Sister Topp is from England too which was cool.

We had an amazing fireside on Friday night about something called the Book of Mormon experiment. I got to see Sister Tailleur from the other zone. So a team from Utah presented this experiment that they have done all over the world. Giving people one page of the Book of Mormon and highlighting references to God or Christ and there were some amazing experiences that people of other religions had. Over the next few days we were trained and able to help with the experiment ourselves. We went to UH yesterday and it was fun. Some people I talked to wanted to learn more so I was able to give out 3 Books of Mormon!

A Week Full of Adventure!

November 6, 2017

Last week we went on a 4 mile hike and it was pretty intense we climbed some good elevation. It took us about 4 hours. It was good exercise but not what we expected. One of the elders' members took a group of us.
We had a Halloween party at the Tabernacle with our zone which was really fun. We couldn't be out after 6 pm  so we had dinner and played games until it was time to go home. I'm grateful to be in this area to be a part of these fun activities. President and Sister Bekker were here for dinner which was great. We played some minute to win it games and one of them is stacking nuts with a skewer and I did pretty well. I got 8.

We also were able to do service at Pearl Harbor and it was fun because we were able to do something different. We went outside the entrance of the U.S.S Missouri and helped clean the walkway. It was great but super hot we were all dripping sweat. It was cool to see all the military personnel walk by though. We also were able to ride with the Senior couple in our area, the Bendixens which was really fun! They took us to lunch afterward and we had a good time talking on the way home. They are so fun!

This week was crazy busy running around to different appointments in the area so we didn't have much time to find new investigators. But we were able to have some really good lessons with solid investigators. We set another person for baptism in the Micronesian branch and she had already been to church.

We also attended the elders baptism and did the missionary moment. We teamed up with another companionship to do a musical number. Elder Hulme played the ukulele and Elder Hoke (from Richland) sang with us! It was great!

We also had 5 investigators at church which was awesome. We had quite a few non-members come to church as well in the Micronesian branch!

Blessed With the Work

October 30, 2017

Last week we were able to go hiking but it was super long and we didn't make it all the way...it goes all along the ridge line. It also started raining so we headed back down. It was fun to get out and do something but it was a little stressful because we didn't have much of our p-day left afterward.

That night we tried to visit a recent convert but the rain had gotten worse and it was pouring! We were in the heart of the storm and could hear the thunder and the lightning was lighting up the whole sky! It was really cool but also a little scary... I got out of the car to get the raincoat in the trunk for Sister Ogawa and I waited outside for her to put it on but that was a bad idea...my legs were getting soaked so I grabbed the other raincoat and wrapped it around myself. So then we headed to the stairs to go down a few steps to the housing but there was a river of water below. It looked kind of deep and was moving really fast so we decided not to go. It was crazy!
We were able to talk to a lot of people at this huge apartment building that has a lot of Chuukese people so we were able to find some new people to teach.

It has been so busy and crazy trying to visit everyone! Not to mention the Elders in this area find several Chuukese people during the week for us to visit. We are definitely blessed with the work here and there will never be a dull moment!

We were able to go on some visits with the Bishop's wife from Kahala Ward which was goo d. We met some families that she is friends with. One of them used to investigate and one of them are her non-member friends who were super nice and let us in. We were able to talk to them for a while and they gave us snacks.
After that we went to visit one of the Chuukese families that we are teaching to invite them to the Halloween party that was planned a few days earlier. We taught them a lesson and had a hard time trying to figure out how to get there because the grandma had to go to work and wouldn't be able to take them or give them a ride home. So we called the wonderful senior missionaries in our area and they said they could give them a ride. But as we went to the bus stop the grandma realized that she had work an hour later than she thought so she would be able to take the kids to the party. We were already running late so we were hoping that we wouldn't miss the party. We weren't sure how long the us ride was going to take either.

Sister Ogawa and I got to the church and went into the gym where we thought the party was and were so hungry that we got food and after realized that we were crashing the Tongan Ward party! haha! So we took our food and went to go find the Micronesian party. It was in another room. We also invited someone else to come so we were a little stressed out looking for people but we were able to find the sisters we invited. Then after we talked to them and they were settled we went back to the gym to check if the kids were there and they were! I was so happy to see that they had made it! They were having a great time with these huge bags of candy. We were glad to see that especially because the Micronesian party was pretty much over. So everything turned out well but it was a crazy night!

We were able to teach the sisters that came to the party and they are super solid! They already come to church and want to be baptized on the same day. They need to get married to their boyfriends so we talked about the law of chastity and they said that is something they want to do. I also had a great time playing with one of the sister's sons that is like 1 year old. He was super cute and kept trying to grab my glasses and my nametag. We became good friends because when we left he cried :( It made me so sad!

Love you all!

Welcome to the city

October 23, 2017

So last p-day we were able to go to valley of the temples which was really fun!

This week was crazy!

I had to wait for a while for Sister Ogawa's flight to get in from big island and they decided to move us to an apartment but we couldn't go to the old one to get things from there until Sister Ogawa was here.

But once Sister Ogawa came we were able to try and get everything figured out. It was a crazy week trying to get adjusted to our apartment and the area. We spent time trying to figure the area out since we don't know what's been happening.

We had some great dinners with members from the Kahala Ward and also from the Chuukese branch that we are over. Kahala is a super nice area and the members are really great and willing to help us with missionary work. The Chuukese are really nice and willing to learn. Some are hard to teach because they seem like they understand what we are saying but we aren't really sure if they truly understand. There are so many people to teach though! And since this is the only Chuukese branch we can go to many different areas to teach.
