Aloha!
Sorry I wasn't able to email last week because I didn't have a P-Day. We flew to Honolulu on Monday. So I will update you on the happenings from the past two weeks!
So on P-Day two weeks ago we got breakfast in a bag and were able to eat outside at a table in the MTC and it was really fun. Also, while we were waiting for our laundry we used our small containers of juice, milk, and yogurt to sing the cup song. So that was a fun random thing.
We were able to go to the temple for a session which was great. Then we had dinner and the person working the check-in counter was Brandon Hansen. We were best friend's growing up in Moses Lake. It was super crazy!
Then we went to choir practice and they actually recorded us singing which was cool. Then we had devotional and Elder Rasband came which was really awesome. He referenced back to the talk he gave in conference and did a question answer type of thing. And the thing that actually hit me the most was the song we sang after, "Because I Have Been Given Much". Especially the line that says, "I cannot see another's lack and I not share," which made me think of all the people I'm going to teach and how I need to share it with everyone!
We had class and taught TRCs like usual and we had in-field orientation to prepare us. It was really long, like 9 hours but it was good. We learned how important members are to finding new investigators which I didn't really realize before but it makes sense. Especially because they have someone to fellowship them and they've had an example to look up to. Saturday was our last class and it was pretty fun. We did an exercise and we all taught together which was really fun. And we had a good discussion. At night we had time so we hung out as a district and wrote in each others journals and practiced singing "Come Thou Fount" to perform during sacrament meeting.
Sunday was an interesting because sadly my companion was having terrible pain in her stomach, she couldn't even stand up so after a long time of waiting we made it to the ER. I imagined it to be a little more urgent but nope. They took their sweet time checking us in and whatnot. So by the time we got back in a room and someone actually came to help us she had been in terrible pain for like 2 hours! At one point she said the pain went away which was super odd. But of course we were glad. They gave her liquids and an IV to get her hydrated and took some tests to see of they could find out what was wrong. We had to wait a while for the results. But they didn't seem to find much except they think she might have had an infection. So they gave her prescription for antibiotics and pain just in case since we were going to be flying out the next day. We were both pretty sad to have missed sacrament meeting because it was fast and testimony meeting and we weren't there to perform the song with everyone. But I'm glad that my companion was able to be helped. And we got to go to the outside world. We got escorted to the ER so when our ride arrived I was like you've come to take us back? Which made me think that it was super cool that we got escorted or that it was like a jail because they keep an eye on wherever we go. Haha
So we were able to attend the rest of the meetings and devotionals. And we had our own district testimony meeting which was really special and I couldn't keep myself together so I cried quite a bit.
The next morning was the day for 4 of our district to fly to Honolulu. So we all headed to the bus and said our goodbyes. We took the bus and train to get to the airport which was fun with all our bags. We also traveled with 4 other Elders and Sisters flying to Honoulu. We were able to call home at the airport and a bunch of people on the same flight as us offered their phones which was super nice. We also went to go get food and one of the men that let us borrow our phone offered to pay for our food which was super nice. So we got Costa Vida and it was good!
On the flight I saw some friends that used to live in Kennewick, the DeSanti's which was crazy! I got to sit by an Elder on the flight. His name is Elder Fa'alavaau which is really fun to say. I practiced it a lot in the MTC because we would see them a lot. We talked for most of the flight which made it go by really fast and I took like a 2 hour nap. It was really hard not to watch other people's screens on the plane because everyone was watching movies!
When we arrived we took some pictures and headed to baggage claim and there were President and Sister Bekker along with the assistants! We all got kukui nut leis which was great. They are super nice and the assistants were there too. We got in the car and headed to Tantales lookout where the first missionaries that came dedicated themselves to the work. It was really cool. Then we headed to the tabernacle for orientation and dinner which was good. Then we headed to the mission home for the night. It was so pretty! And it was super cool because it was the same house that Elder Groberg and his family stayed at when they were here. We all opened our "Christmas Letters" to find out who our companions were and where we would be serving. I was called to Kaneohe!
The next morning we said our goodbyes and met our new companions. My companion is Sister Tailleur. She is super nice. We also have a car which is great and our apartment is actually pretty nice. I was expecting a shack.
I am running out of time so sorry for the lack of details for my first week in the field. It was a lot different than I expected. We visited a lot of less actives and whatnot. We didn't tract like I expected and I struggled with being tired all the time! Every night I slept like a rock! The people here are so wonderful and kind like I knew they would be. I've met a lot of people and have had great fun.
We were able to go to a traditional Japanese dance class called Bon Dance which was really fun and there were a bunch of cute older Japanese people. Then they had Zumba after which was super fun! And then a member took us to Pizza Hut for dinner which was delicious.
It is still really hard for me to go up to random people and talk about the gospel so I've been working on that. We have met some great people and had good experiences. I love it here!
